Changing Images of Columbus in the Elm City, 1892-2008
The purpose of this brief presentation is to share with you some information and thoughts I have regarding the different images, which scholars call “visual culture” of Christopher Columbus, right here in the Elm City. This work is part of my dissertation research in public art and fits in as a potential narrative chapter in that in looking at the different ways in which New Haven has commemorated Columbus, we can tease out changing attitudes and perspectives of both the communities that commissioned the works of art and the public audiences exposed to the work. Also, we can see how art itself changes over time, each era espousing particular kinds of art-making.
